Hi there guys...This post is just an experiment towards creating a platform for the up-coming forum... By the way, I got something that need your feedback regarding what we have learnt in the literature class that we're having this semester.

Based on your reading and discussion during the recent tutorial, what is your opinion regarding the Colonialists and the Natives in the short story, POWER. Every response given are warmly welcome.

Basically, the story is about the time of Malaya was colonialized by the British. It was quite confusing at first by who was telling the story as it turned out to be the colonialist himself. I felt the story was quite boring (to be honest). Luckily we had this tutorial and it made me understand more of what was the story teller was saying. :D

Thanx for the posting...at first time reading the story I found the story quite bored as well but after few times of reading it, I got to know that the story was interesting actually. The writer helps to 'awake' our nation by picture what is happening within the nation that contributes to the slowness of a race to 'educate' or modernise themselves. An one more thing that I love about this story that it build confilict in readers where there are two parties that have their own belief, one who belief in black magic and still practise it but not to the other party.
P/S:If not because of the task given after lecture, we wouldn't read and 'dig' the story deep enough I guess... :p

from my reading, the short story Power represent the scenario of Malayan during colonialism. Colonialist is much more advance that they are able to colonize other places. The native people that have been colonialized are quite naive. They still believe in the power of black magic and seemed to practice it as self protector.

hYe..just want to give s0me ideas ab0ut the st0ry 'PoWeR'... In my opinion, I think the writer is trying to be fair by not being in his own nation side (which is the native). He is trying to portray the real situation happened during c0l0nial time where s0me of the natives are not self-dependent. They just f0ll0w the pers0n who has big authority (or in the word, 'power), which is the c-l-nialist. We can relate it to the p0int that the natives d0 n0t have en0ugh sense 0f agency t0 pr0tect their 0wn nati0n.
In the other sides, the writer also sh0wed s0ne natives characters (there might be 0n;ly minority of them) wh0 are anti-c0l0nialist & prejudice t0wards c0l0nialist, through the character Medicine Men.

Assalamualaikum w.b.t…Hi!I have studied Arab Literature before but I still have difficulty in learning literature.First time I read the story I felt a little bit confused. Moreover I’m not interested in that kind of story..hehe. In my opinion, the characters in the short story play the important roles in convey a message to the reader. For example the colonist represented by the Tuan or Org Puteh. He has a great power and he can influence the natives. He has curiosity- desire to know everything. There is a wisdom element in the short story. The other character is the Medicine-Man who was influencing many people. I can say they are independent groups. They can manage their life without follow the Orang Puteh. They have a sense of agency, knowing their right. From this short story, I learn something. What is the key concept of the colonialism? It makes me more appreciate my own country. Even in the same community, sometimes there were divisions, apart into two groups between the opposite and supporter. All events contribute to the change of new attitude among the people towards the colonial rules. That’s all from me.

SALAM…well actually I did not know have to gives some comment about the short story ‘power’ but this my quick thought about that short story and some information about colonialism vs nationalism. First let me talk about nation. “Nation-building is a process of identity creation of developing and nurturing a ‘sense of a nation’ ”from Hng Hung Yong, 1998:22.From ‘the little dictionary nationalism means policy of nation independence and colonial means of a colony or colonies. Colonialism make natives powerless and explotation. Nationalism meaning are give political determination of self.
Second, I want to makes summarizes about story power. This story makes me understand more about the colonize according in the view from the writter. Some will think that the white man was a great person helping to manage that village but yet we have to realise they come with secret reason maybe to take the land and the natives powerless. The medician-man character are the anti-colonialist he persued others to not follow white man order to paid the land tax.why we have to paid??this were our beloved land our place...the character give the natives the awareness about loving nation and regain them self.Feeling the owernship of the land/country.Malay people must change there attitude MAKE PROGRESS in your life.Do not allowed the colonize ideologi leave in your heart or mind.

noorcayunk - yup, that's thay way i thought of the writer of this story...

inassoleha - I'd come across the same problem as u gone through b4. and i like your statement "Even in the same community, sometimes there were divisions". so y should we divide the Malaysian community who is just across the sea?

kjum - sometimes we need others to make us realise ways to cherish our own land. so here God lets the colonialists do it. But at the same time, their ideologies are needed to improve the nation.
